How Heat Set Inserts Work

These inserts press into a slightly undersized hole using a soldering iron. The heat melts the surrounding plastic, allowing it to flow into the insert's tapered fins. Once cooled, the result is an extremely strong, reusable threaded connection — far superior to captive nuts or self-tapping screws in printed parts.

Installation Tips

  • Use a dedicated soldering iron tip sized for your insert (flat or tapered tips work best)
  • Set your iron to 200–230°C (390–450°F) — hot enough to flow plastic but not so hot that it chars
  • Let the insert heat for 2–3 seconds before pressing — don't force it
  • Drill the hole ~0.030" (~0.8mm) deeper than the insert OAL to allow room for displaced plastic
  • Works with PLA, ABS, PETG, ASA, Nylon, and other thermoplastics (not resin prints)

Why Use Threaded Inserts?

Rather than design around 3D printing limitations, split your project into modular components fastened with inserts and machine screws. You get greater design flexibility, can reprint only failed parts, and end up with a more professional result.
